Edo Sashimono
Wood Joinery
“Sashimono” refers to the process of conjoining two pieces of wood together without the aid of nails but rather by using a variety of different techniques such as the process of “hozotsugi” wherein one plank will have a protrusion created at its edge and the other have a recess known as a “hozoana” made into it, allowing the former to be inserted into the later and thereby conjoined. Edo sashimono, known for requiring a high level of proficiency to create, may look simpler in comparison with their elegant Kyo sashimono counterparts from Kyoto that utilize ornamentation such as lacquer work and gold leaf, they have their own chicness borne from capitalizing on the grain of the wood by the artisans, their durability also being one of their alluring points.
