Fukuromono

Pouches

The word fukuromono in Japanese refers to any sort of item used to house or carry things such as purses for money, wallets, pouches and bags. And during the flourishing of popular culture during the Edo period (1603-1867), these pouches used to carry everyday items also flourished, the popularity of stylish bags such as tobacco pouches spreading throughout the masses. However, it was not only their decoration but also their practicality that developed during this time, and items such as small glasses and mobile phone cases produced in the same traditional methods as these tobacco pouches remain popular even today.
