Edo Hoki (Brooms)

Edo-hoki brooms are a kind of broom made from broomcorn, an annual grass of the family Gramineae, but as broomcorn itself is not grown in large quantities, it has become something of a rare material. The traditional production process wherein broomcorn is bundled together by hand requires both dexterity and strength. Lightweight, supple, and firm, Edo-Hoki brooms are said to be the best for cleaning traditional Japanese-style tatami rooms as they are the best for making tatami mats (a type of matting used placed on the floor of Japanese homes made from woven soft rush on the surface) shine.
