Edo Kimekomi Ningyo (Wood and Cloth Dolls)
Edo Kimekomi Ningyo dolls, made from pouring a paste of powdered paulownia known as toso into a mold to make the body which is then covered in doll-sized garments, entertain the eyes with their refined, somewhat slender faces and distinct facial features and the splendid costumes they wear.
As it’s said that the body of the doll presents a clear representation of the artist’s style, the most important thing about dollmaking is considered to be the crafting of the model itself (i.e. the body); as such, there are a large range of model styles that can be seen today.
