Tokyo Ginki (Silverware)

Tokyo being home to the Ginza (where silver coins are minted) and the townspeople’s affinity accessories made of silver led to the popularization of silver goods during the Edo Period (1603-1867). Tokyo remains a thriving producer of silver products even today.

Tokyo silverware is made by taking high purity silver, hammering it, carving with a chisel, and fitting with other precious metals using traditional metalworking techniques. Stainers known as “furubieki” that dive the metal an aged quality are applied to give it an even more profound color, and the beautiful, glowing handicrafts made via these processes such as vases, tea utensils, tableware, ornaments, and accessories remain popular.
