Tokyo Kiri-Tansu (Paulownia Bureau)
Paulownia is a very light and flexible material with few contractions and excellent breathability. Even in such a humid country as Japan, it does not retain moisture and helps prevent against corrosion at the hands of insects, that in addition to its fire-resistant qualities make it an excellent choice of material for storing high quality garments such as silk, calligraphic works on paper, and photographs. Bureaus made of paulownia used to be something of a staple when a bride enters a home upon being married.
Aside from the its functionality, the beauty of the wood grain, the chest’s ease of use, and its durability make it the perfect piece of furniture for Japan’s climate.
