Yumiya (Arrow)

The process of making arrowa is an arduous one, with arrow makers having to adjust for the weight, girth, and overall balance of the arrow itself, making sure that there are discrepancies with the sizes of each of the 4 arrows in a set. Above all the most difficult aspect of the process is taking the bamboo material the arrow is made from, placing it on a table, and rotating it in the palm of one’s hand all the while shaving off joints and sprouts with a small knife in a process known as “kurumakake” that serves to produce the balance necessary to achieve the bow’s true shape. Another painstaking aspect of the process that requires the highest amount of skill is that of passing the bamboo through a furnace, careful to not allow it to catch fire, in order to correct any bends in the material that also gives the material its brownish color in a process called “hiire.”
